报告题目/Title: RepuCoin: An extra resilient blockchain consensus system

报告人/Speaker: Dr Jiangshan Yu, Monash University, Australia

报告摘要Abstract

Existing proof-of-work based cryptocurrencies cannot tolerate attackers controlling more than 50% of computing power in the system at any time, but assume that such a condition happening is “unlikely”. However, recent facts and attacks render this assumption unrealistic. For example, in the last year, there are already at least 10 discovered 51% attacks, where a single attack stole up to 18 million US dollars.

To address this issue, we propose RepuCoin, the world-first system that is able to tolerate 51% attack. While providing better resilience to known attacks, RepuCoin also achieves a high throughput of around 20,000 transactions per second.

报告人简介 Short Bio

Dr. Jiangshan Yu is a lecturer (equivalent to U.S. assistant professor) at Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University, Australia, and an honorary research fellow in the Centre for Cyber Security and Privacy, University of Birmingham, UK, where he received his PhD degree. He was a finalist of the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Enterprise Fellow, UK, in 2015, and received Chinese Government Award for Outstanding PhD Scholar Abroad (Success rate: 1% worldwide, 3% in UK).

His research on blockchain consensus, called RepuCoin (IEEE Trans. on Computers 19), provides the first blockchain system that is able to tolerate the 51% attack. This work has been covered by over 60 news media globally including Finder, ZDNet, 今日头条(Toutiao), 搜狐(Sohu), BTC Wires, ScienceDaily, Ethereum World News, EurekAlert!, The US Breaking news, Homeland Security Today, etc.

His research on ledger-based applications in secure messaging (IEEE TIFS’ 18, patent pending) provides the first messaging system that can detect the compromise of decryption keys. This work has been covered by more than 40 international and national news media including Science Daily, Phys.org, ACM TechNews, EurekAlert, Futurism, and Silicon Republic. The news has been released in more than 7 languages by media from more than 10 countries including UK, US, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Turkey, Spain, and India. This application has been further developed by a University of Birmingham spin-off, and have attracted funding support from Innovate UK.

He has also co-designed a secure booting solution for Huawei Ltd, the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world, to manage their next generation network devices securely.
